International day of the girl child

Mama Peter called again
'Ma' I answered as I ran to her
'Abeg help me put this kunu for my head' she said

Mama Peter was our neighbour years back
Her husband was retired and had no other business so he basically sat at home always while his wife made puff-puff and kunu which she hawked around

Mama Peter had 11 children in all
By the 9th one we couldn't understand why she kept giving birth
Until I overheard her telling my mum one day
'My husband say him must get man pikin wey go take after him, so na boy we dey find, abeg put me for your prayers oh' she said

They eventually had a boy as the 11th child but Peter grew up to become the neighbourhood terror
Ohhhhh how we wished him away several times
Papa Peter just wanted a son and cared nothing about how the kids were brought up
Every financial burden rested squarely on his wife

Many years later in his old and weak state, it was his daughters who catered and cared for him.

Today, the world celebrates the International day of the girl child
And I enjoin you today to join in this celebration

'I must have a male child' one would say
Many homes have broken up today because of this
Many cases of infidelity and extra marital relationships all in a bid to have a male child
Do we trade the beauty of life, purpose and the blessing of having a child over the sex of the child?

Today many women have and  are achieving great feats and challenging the status Quo Some of our very own are;

Celebrate that girl child around you, protect and raise her as the Queen she is
You never know how much impact she'd turn out to bring to your home and the world at large.

My people, I was taking my daughter to school when I heard sounds of feet behind me and a man making a call signal. I turned to see what was going on, only to find a correct dog right behind me. Hmmmmmm my mouth opened on its own accord, next thing I knew, doors were flying open because the way my screaming pierced the air, ahhhhhhhhhhhh! The man started apologizing profusely, saying the dog just took off the minute he opened his door. And everyone went into their rooms as per, normal occurrence. Since I set foot in the Dublin, I think dogs are dragging numbers with humans. Everywhere you turn, someone has a dog and you need to see how protective they are about it. They smile and tell you 'Don't worry, he/she is friendly and loves to play' Then they pause with their dog and wait for you to rub the dog. It's considered impolite and somewhat rude when you don't.
