May Nigeria not happen to you: Brain drain.
As posted on the social media by his father, a young man died because there were no doctors to attend to him. This was indeed a sad story to read as there have been so many incidencs similar to this.
Recently, Uche Rowland the president of the Nigerian Medical Association said that Nigeria has only 24,000 licensed medical practitioners left in the country, and this is less than 10% of the number required for a WHO recommendation.
Today, a bill was read for the second time by the Nigerian House of Representatives proposing that locally trained Medical and dental practitioners be prevented from being fully licensed until they've worked in the country for five years and the reason they cited was that it was their way of giving back to the country. This bill was supported by majority of the lawmakers in session.
It's sad to see that instead of finding ways to better the life of these professionals, the lawmakers are instead finding ways to compel them to stay in an environment that is not favourable/conducive for them to work.
Yes, the nation is facing serious brain drain but that is because the nation does not seem to care about them.
No sane person would leave where they're well paid with favourable working conditions just because.
This doesn't not only apply to Medical personnels. 80%, if not 90% of the best brains in our country have all migrated and more are still leaving because we have failed to provide favourable working conditions.
Take for example, you still remember the case of ASUU with the government? Well, they're still in court.
What right thinking person wouldn't leave to a better place?
I'd candidly advice that our lawmakers and government in general find ways to make the lives of our intellectuals better, else soon, we'd be left with nothing.
